Did you ever hear the well-known saying…
“Teamwork makes the dream work”
John Maxwell, an American Clergyman
…and wonder why? Think about a challenging task that would take hours to complete alone, but how quickly it could be done with a few more hands to share the load and the responsibility. For some, working or planning individually is a preference or a necessity due to confidentiality. For others, collaboration or brainstorming with peers or colleagues would greatly benefit the process. So why do we not consider a teamwork approach when possible? Worse yet, why do we not consider helping out a colleague when the opportunity presents itself?
There is also another point to consider with our co-workers…
Most understand the dynamics and role of kindness and manners building a warm and inviting space. However, some may not realize or consider how treating co-workers as internal customers not only benefits the situation but also creates a kinder, more engaging work atmosphere. To clarify, an internal customer is someone who works or exists within your wheelhouse, but may have a different responsibility than yourself. Blindly doing individual responsibilities day-to-day may work – but imagine if co-workers helped out a buddy now and then when needed as part of the work culture! One could think of this as Karma?!
Being pleasant, positive and helpful spreads a feeling of camaraderie, happiness and genuine caring – which makes for a wonderful work environment. When the work environment is happy, the external customers (those outside of the internal environment) who receive services or benefits notice a tangible difference in the atmosphere. The energy is vibrant and the experience runs more like a well-oiled machine – smooth and without hiccups or bumps.
The opposite happens when acting or working in silos. The cogs in a wheel collapse or seize up when one or more parts of the mechanism stop. This impacts the natural flow for everyone. The contributions of each individual directly – or indirectly – affect the actions and outcome of things for the entirety. Think of how this parallels or resembles the impact of our actions on climate change. The actions of individuals add up for the entire planet. If each individual acted sustainably – then the overall impact on carbon emissions, water quality, air quality, etc. would be a positive outcome (i.e. reduced carbon emissions, cleaner air and water) vs. if each individual acts irresponsibly then the outcome may be dire for us all.
If each of us thinks about our impact or contribution toward the bigger picture or goal – and works collaboratively together as a team…it truly will be dream work. Goals met – Dreams coming true!
