Loss of a loved one pulls at your heartstrings in many ways. Some express loss through sadness, crying and generally showing grief outwardly, while some may bury their emotions and transfer feelings through expressions of anger or frustration. There is no one way that personal loss comes across – it’s a very intimate and individual process.

When it seems unfair – when a loved one departs prematurely or unexpectedly – this raises the level of grief and feelings of loss. So, how do we deal with this? What brings resilience and relief effectively? Again, there is no ONE answer to these questions. It is a multi-tiered process and everyone handles grief in their own way. Resilience through healthy coping mechanisms and the support of family and friends definitely helps heal one’s mind, body and soul. Simply planting a flower or tree, or reminiscing about happier times spent with your loved one(s) are a couple small positive ways to work through a difficult time. Visiting a special place where you went together, or doing an activity to honor your loved one may bring some small measure of comfort, but not necessarily closure. The memories of fun, happy times together can be treasured as well as shared with others if that is something that brings solace and a smile to your face. When reaching out to family and friends who have recently lost a loved one, know that just your expression of caring helps – mere words may not heal the loss, but they certainly show your support and love to the ones experiencing grief in their lives. Taking precious moments to connect and forming your own new memories with friends and loved ones paves the path of resilience. These treasures, new memories and support, bring comfort to your friends and family and show your love. Thank you for being there for them – both now and in the future.

The Great Beyond

Mere words cannot express to you
Nor a hug adequately fill
The emptiness departure brings
Leaving us vacant, stinging, and still

Cry not for loss nor holes we feel
That never will we fill
Accept the loving memories
That soothe and always will

Embrace the bonds formed beyond
What time and place can measure
Find precious moments deep within
For these are priceless treasure
