May brings many things to mind – living life, new life, things that bloom beautifully – and of course that leads me to think of my mother, but really both of my parents generally.
Mothers have the honor of being the most thought of people on the second Sunday of May each year – Mother’s Day! We shower them with flowers, candy, cards, hugs and hopefully our presence when this is possible or a phone call if we are too far away. I am lucky to still have my mother and feel blessed to be able to call or visit her with some frequency. This still never seems to provide enough time to really tell her how much I truly love and appreciate her and all that she has done for me.
Fathers also have their special day – the third Sunday each June. We give them gifts ranging from comical neckties to custom car washes and anything else in between and beyond. But do we ever really know if they know how much we love and appreciate them too? My father is a unique character in many ways with his own idiosyncrasies that I will never understand (LOL)! I love him nonetheless – and will treasure him forever.
Thinking of parents from an adult perspective, the realization hits me that time passes so quickly and often we don’t notice until years have flown by in the blink of an eye. My own perception of time seems to reveal years or 6-month blips moving past me at warp speed! But how can this be? The snapshot of an hourglass with sand sifting through slowly and then appearing to pass more quickly is a good analogy for this experience.

Then, I become philosophical and sappy, wanting to stop the progression of time – only to realize that my own kids will someday have the same realization and epiphany?! Time stops for no one. Appreciate the time allotted and live every day and minute to the fullest. Be Kind. Love your parents/family/friends – Live your life with no regrets. Enjoy!
PARENTS
THEY WATCH US GROW
FROM HEAD TO TOE
THEY SEE US CHANGE
BOTH GOOD AND STRANGE
*
THEY KISS OUR CHEEKS
AND WIPE OUR TEARS
THEY WIPE OUR CUTS
AND CLEAN OUR EARS
*
THEY LIFT US UP
WHEN WE ARE DOWN
THEY MAKE US SMILE—
REMOVE OUR FROWN
*
THEY RAISE OUR HOPES
AND RAISE OUR JOYS
THEY GIVE US LOVE
AND PRECIOUS TOYS
*
THEN . . .
*
THEY LET US GO
TO LIVE AND LEARN
THEY WISH US LUCK
AND IN RETURN . . .
*
THEY SOON GROW OLD
BEFORE OUR EYES
THEY START TO CHANGE
WE SOON REALIZE
*
THEY LOVE US STILL
AND WE LOVE THEM
THEY LET US GIVE—
AND IN RETURN . . .
*
WE GIVE THE LIFTS
WE ONCE RECEIVED
WE MAKE THEM SMILE
AND FEEL RELIEVED
*
WE GIVE THEM HUGS
AND KISS THEIR CHEEKS
WE SMOOTH THEIR WRINKLED
SOFT PHYSIQUES
*
WE RAISE THEIR HOPES
AND RAISE THEIR JOYS
WE GIVE THEM LOVE
AND JOYFUL NOISE
*
WE SOON BECOME
WHAT THEY ONCE WERE
WE GIVE THE LOVE
AND IN A BLUR . . .
*
WE START THE CYCLE
ONCE AGAIN
WE WALK THE LIFE
OF OUR PARENTS LANE . . .
